October 11th is International Coming Out Day around the world, an important date in the calendar that raises awareness of a process that members of the LGBTQIA+ community often struggle with. In most Western and many other societies around the world, being queer is no longer seen as strange. Most societies have become so accepting and supportive that we can live our lives openly and without fear of being discriminated against.
Much of this is also thanks so a much bigger amount of role models and visibility of members of our community who have largely normalised LGBTQIA+ life in modern society. And yet, there is still a lot of work to be done. Many people who come from more conservative backgrounds or macho cultures are afraid of coming out for fear of getting shunned or even fear for their own safety.
For this year's Coming Out Day, the national airlines of The Netherlands KLM invited us to join its Over The Rainbow initiative's event and host a COMEDY QUIZ at its offices at Schiphol. It was so wonderful to have been invited to be a part of this and to share stories of our own coming out.
Some members of their team also came forward and reflected on their own journeys and what they are doing today to help others. We prepared a special edition of our quiz that contained some questions about LGBTQIA+ related topics and we were thrilled that so many of these questions offered nuggets of education for all attendees, both LGBTQIA+ and straight.Â
This what we love doing. Bringing people together around a good cause, having a laugh with them and celebrating diversity. If you're keen to advance your own DE&I goals or you simply need someone to do a fun activity around a special topic, don't look any further. His the contact us button and get in touch!
